JHELUM: The accused who opened fire on Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza’s academy within the limits of the City Police Station in Jhelum, Punjab province, was killed in retaliatory action.
According to the report, firing was carried out outside the Quran Research Academy located in GTS Chowk. The attacker was killed in police retaliatory fire while a police officer was injured. After the incident, a heavy contingent of police has reached the spot. When the armed attacker tried to stop him, he started firing.
Jhelum police said that the unknown attacker was killed, the accused has not been identified yet. Jhelum police spokesperson Kashif Kiani said that Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza was outside the Quran and Sunnah Research Academy where he gives lectures when a man came into the premises with a 9 mm pistol, lay down on the ground and opened fire.
Jhelum Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chaudhry Shafiq said that the police retaliated, killing the attacker on the spot. He added that Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza remained safe during the attack. Kashif Kayani confirmed that a policeman from the cleric’s security team was injured during the attack.
The constable was shot in the leg and was taken to the Jhelum District Headquarters Hospital, where his condition is said to be out of danger. SSP Chaudhry Shafiq, who was on security duty at the time of the attack, was active and would be further tightened. He added that help from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) would be sought to identify the attacker.
