Chicken meat prices continue to rise in Pakistan

Chicken prices set to rise as govt imposes Rs36 billion in new taxes to meet IMF demands

LAHORE: Due to the wave of inflation in the country, broiler meat and other poultry products are becoming out of reach of the citizens.

Despite the official rates, broiler meat prices are being sold at high levels in the market, which is causing serious concern to the common consumers.

According to the Market Research Department, the official price of broiler meat has been fixed at Rs 526 per kg, however, it is being sold up to Rs 550 per kg in the open market. Similarly, the price of live chicken has reached Rs 363 per kg while the price of boneless meat has reached Rs 700 per kg, which is causing inflation for the citizens.

Citizens say that despite no increase in income, the rising prices of food items are putting severe pressure on their budget. Broiler meat, which was once cheap and considered the basic protein of every household, has now become difficult for the common man to buy.

Economists say currency depreciation, rising production costs and supply chain issues are the main factors behind the increase in chicken prices.

Consumers have demanded that the government ensure implementation of government rates and take immediate steps to control prices.
