Chinese climber died after hitting rocks at K2 mountain

GILGIT BALTISTAN: Chinese female mountaineer Guan Jing passed away on Tuesday evening when she was hit by rolling rocks while coming down from the summit of K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) confirmed on Wednesday.

This is the third fatal event on Pakistani summits this season. On July 19, 2025, a Pakistani climber, Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain, died after an avalanche hit during a K2 expedition in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Previously, on June 4, celebrated Czech mountaineer Klára Kolouchová passed away during her expedition on Nanga Parbat (8,125m), commonly referred to as the “Killer Mountain.”

The incident happened on the Abruzzi Spur trail between Camp I and Advanced Base Camp — a stretch that is known for regular rockfalls. Guan had climbed to the top on Monday with a team of climbers before she started to descend,” ACP Vice President Karrar Haidri said in a statement.

He mentioned that recovery operations for her remains are in process, while other climbers who climbed to the summit of K2 on the same day are now in the safe process of returning to base camp.

Altogether, over 27 climbers scaled the summit of K2 on Monday. She formed part of the 15-citizen team from Imagine Nepal that climbed to the summit of the peak at 3:32 PM Pakistan time on August 11, 2025.

This was the third fatal accident in Gilgit-Baltistan this climbing season. On 28th July, retired German Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier died on Lailla Peak (6,096m) in Hushe Valley of Ghanche district when she was hit by rockfall at 5,700 meters.

Two other deadly incidents took place earlier this July – on July 18, Pakistani mountaineer Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain of Skardu died when an avalanche hit Camp 1 on K2, some 500 meters above the base camp.

The avalanche swept up four climbers, two of whom were Nepalese Sherpas, with one foreign climber getting minor injuries while two others were rescued.
