PECA 2025 enacts the establishment of the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority headquartered in Islamabad with additional offices in provincial capitals.
The authority will consist of nine members headed by the Interior Secretary, the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the Chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).
Among the other five appointed members, a journalist with 10 years of experience, a software engineer, a lawyer, a social media professional, and an IT expert from the private sector will be appointed.
Under the amended law of PECA, the authority will be answerable for the protection and rights of social media users and will look after the registration of social media platforms.
Authority will have the power to cancel their registration, set regulatory standards, and exercise disciplinary powers over social media. This move would regulate social media and prevent its misuse to disseminate harmful content while protecting the rights of citizens in the digital world.
