DUBAI: A Pakistani driver working for a luxury transport company in Dubai has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexually assaulting a female passenger.

The incident happened when a Polish woman booked a ride from a hotel in Business Bay. Instead of following the designated route, the driver took a detour to a remote and dimly lit location where he assaulted the woman.

According to the court records, it was late at night when the woman had called for a ride. The driver stopped the car mid-journey, forced her out, and raped her in an isolated area.

After the assault, the woman fled and walked to a nearby building to catch another taxi to return home. That night she went to bed, but upon waking the next morning, memories of the incident overwhelmed her, leading her to report the case to the police.

A forensic examination was carried out, and she later made an identification during the search for the driver. He had denied the accusation in court, claiming that he had been misinterpreted in his statements as a result of a lack of a translator.

Forensic evidence was plentiful and uniquely substantiated the claim of the woman, leading to the conviction.

The court’s verdict has sentenced the driver to one year in prison upon which he will stand deported. This case brings to light the importance of passenger safety and security especially that of women while in transport services.
