Devastating road crash leaves 17 dead, several injured in northern Pakistan

MARDAN: Footage shows wrapped bodies lined up inside the Mardan Medical Complex Hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where injured victims were being treated.

“Two more of the injured succumbed to their wounds, bringing the total number of deceased to 17. Six more individuals who are injured are currently receiving treatment in hospitals,” said Ziaulislam Yousafzai, a spokesperson for Mardan Medical Complex Hospital.

The accident took place on the Swat Expressway in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near Mardan district.

According to local media, a passenger bus travelling to Peshawar broke down due to a mechanical fault and stopped on the highway shoulder.

A speeding minibus approaching from behind reportedly lost control and crashed into the stationary bus and passengers standing nearby.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan, where speeding, weak enforcement of traffic regulations, driver fatigue and poor vehicle maintenance frequently contribute to fatal crashes on highways.
