LAHORE: Bhakkar police have registered a case under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) against a local doctor for allegedly posting critical remarks about Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Facebook.
The case was reportedly registered by a security official who raised the issue regarding the doctor’s remarks. The development has sparked a debate on social media, with many questioning the role of security officials in such cases.
Dr Shahryar, a senior surgeon who had earlier served at Mayo Hospital, was allegedly charged on the basis of some videos. His last post on social media was addressed to his patients. The incident has raised concerns about the increasing use of cybercrime laws to quell political dissent.
It may be noted that six months ago, the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab had banned police personnel from using social media during duty hours. However, reports suggest that Bhakkar police officers were actively using social media when the case was registered against the doctor.
The registration of the case has sparked a debate on the application of cyber laws, with critics saying such measures stifle freedom of expression. Many on social media have expressed concern over the growing crackdown on dissenting voices.
