ECP disqualifies PTI MNA Abdul Latif Chitrali: Here’s why!

ECP sets January 15 deadline for assembly members to submit returns

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Abdul Latif Chitrali, a member of the National Assembly from NA-1 Chitral, declaring his seat vacant.

According to media reports, Chitrali was disqualified after his conviction in cases related to the May 9 incidents. The commission today delivered its reserved verdict.

The verdict said that Chitrali was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an anti-terrorism court.

As a result, he has been disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution.

Yesterday, a five-member bench of the ECP, headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, heard the disqualification case before reserving the verdict.

According to the constitution, any member of the assembly who has been sentenced to imprisonment for more than two years is disqualified from holding office.

Yesterday, the ECP disqualified Senators Ijaz Chaudhry, Ahmed Khan Bhachar and Ahmed Chatha after they were convicted by an anti-terrorism court.
