ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued the schedule of election for the vacant general seat from Punjab in the Senate on May 29, according to media reports.
The seat was vacant following the death of Professor Sajid Mir on May 3, 2025.
The nomination papers may be filled out on May 14 and 15, while the list of candidates will be published on May 16, according to notification by the provincial election commissioner.
The nomination papers will be scrutinized on May 17, with appeals against approval or rejection filed on May 20. The appeals will be resolved on May 22.
The new list of candidates will be released on May 23, and candidatures may be withdrawn by May 24. The polls will be held at the Punjab Assembly chambers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The nomination papers may be obtained at the Punjab ECP headquarters on 10-Court Street in Lahore during office hours.
Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate for the general seat of Senate Waqr Mehdi won the by-election held on Tuesday (today), according to unofficial results.
Waqar Mehdi got 111 votes to win the seat, while his opponent, Nighat Mirza of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), lacked the required votes to win the election.
Two of Mehdi’s votes were declared rejected. Nevertheless, the PPP nominee comfortably crossed the required threshold of 81 votes needed to secure the Senate seat.
The seat was vacant after the demise of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) ‘s veteran Senator Taj Haider.
