Federal govt unveils plan to plant fruit trees along highways

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced a plan to launch a new initiative to commercially plant fruit trees along motorways and highways across the country.

The plan is aimed at promoting green growth, attracting private investment, and advancing the country’s climate goals, the official press release said.

As per the details, the program will follow a three-year lease model and is designed to both expand the nation’s green cover and create income-generating opportunities.

The decision was taken in a high-level meeting held in Islamabad, comprising Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik and Minister for Communications Aleem Khan.

During the meeting, the officials finalized the framework for the project, which will enable private investors to lease land adjacent to highways for the cultivation of climate-appropriate fruit varieties.

On the occasion, Dr. Musadik Malik emphasized that partnering with the private sector would not only increase green cover but also generate economic opportunities and play a crucial role in achieving Pakistan’s environmental targets.

“This initiative not only enhances our ecological footprint but also opens up new economic avenues for sustainable development,” he said.
