ISLAMABAD: Former Director General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Saleem Shahzad has submitted his resignation to the NAB chairman citing health and personal reasons.
In his four-page resignation letter, Shahzad said he was resigning with a heavy heart and stressed that no charges of corruption had been proven against him.
A retired Major of the Pakistan Army, Shahzad was injured during his military service. He joined the NAB in 1999 as one of the founding members. He started his civil service career as an officer of the 18th grade and rose to the rank of DG in the 21st grade.
In the past years, Shahzad Saleem had moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) challenging the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)’s decision to summon him following allegations of harassment by Tayyaba Gul.
In his petition, Saleem argued that the PAC notice exceeded its jurisdiction and sought its suspension. He pointed out that cases against Gul are already pending in the Lahore Accountability Court and the Federal Sharia Court. Saleem also suggested that the complaint could be influenced by vested interests and accused the PAC of exceeding its authority.
Gul had alleged before the PAC that she was stripped naked and filmed at the NAB’s Lahore office, with the videos later shown to her husband after he was in custody. She claimed that she was not given a medical examination as ordered by the court and was forced to sign a blank paper.
