Govt employees’ salaries to be withheld until traffic fines are paid

Punjab introduces strict new traffic fines & penalties

LAHORE: Government vehicles have emerged as the worst violators of traffic rules in provincial capital Lahore, forcing authorities to consider tougher measures to curb the trend.

As per the details, a new proposal suggests that government drivers’ salaries be withheld until their traffic fines are paid.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed has floated a controversial idea of calculating fines based on social and financial status rather than the nature of the violation.

“The bigger the vehicle, the bigger the fine,” Waheed said, adding that luxury vehicles worth Rs50 million should face fines 10 times higher than the standard rates. “Police and traffic police vehicles have violated the law the most.”

The move is aimed at improving road discipline and accountability, especially between government and law enforcement vehicles, which are often accused of violating traffic rules.

Additionally, the CTO announced a crackdown on beggars, especially those who beg women and children on the city streets.

“There is no place for beggars on the streets of Lahore,” Waheed asserted, adding that cases would be registered against violators.
