Govt unveils plan for Karachi-Sukkur Motorway

New speed limit announced for motorways

KARACHI: Construction of the new motorway connecting Karachi to Sukkur is set to begin in 2025.

The project, announced by Federal Minister for Communications Aleem Khan, aims to improve transport links between the north and south of Pakistan, connecting the Karachi Port to Sukkur.

The funding will be obtained through a public-private partnership in which the Sindh provincial government will be invited to participate. If the partnership is not formed, the federal government will fully fund the project. The completed motorway is estimated to generate billions of rupees in revenue. 3,000 billion in revenue over 25 years.

The decision to build the M6 motorway directly from Karachi to Sukkur instead of Hyderabad was made after an agreement between the federal and Sindh governments.

The change in route is aimed at better facilitating port traffic. Previous attempts to establish a public-private partnership for the project failed, leading to the current project.
