Historic Moment: Pakistan to send first astronaut to space in 2026

ISLAMABAD: Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has crossed another important milestone as it has successfully completed the selection phase of candidates for the space mission.

According to ISPR, after the initial screening, two candidates were shortlisted, and both candidates will undergo astronaut training for 2 months.

The candidates were selected after undergoing comprehensive medical, psychological, and aptitude assessments conducted at the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC), in accordance with international human spaceflight standards.

After completion of the training, a candidate will be selected for the space mission in October-November. The space mission will take off from the Chinese space station with a Pakistani astronaut.

The bilateral “Space Cooperation Agreement” was signed in February 2025. Steps have been taken under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Pakistan under the Space Vision.

In accordance with this historic step, the Chinese government has selected Pakistan as the first foreign partner in its astronaut program.
