JAAC calls off AJK protests after demands accepted

High alert issued in Azad Kashmir amid security tensions

MUZAFFARABAD: A day after the government gave in to its demands and pledged necessary relief, the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) declared on Tuesday that it would be ending the ongoing protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

“The government accepted all the demands of the protesters yesterday,” the AAC said in a statement referring to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement of a Rs23 billion subsidy package for the people of AJK.

However, organizers of the march announced today to be observed as a “black day” across Azad Kashmir in mourning for the people killed on Monday during AAC protests.

Earlier today in a statement, a JAAC spokesperson said a complete shutdown will be observed till 3 pm today in mourning for three people killed in peaceful protests by law enforcers.

In a video statement, Awami Action Committee representatives said they demanded justice for the three youths killed by the Rangers during the protest against skyrocketing inflation, exorbitant taxes, and electricity bills.

“Firing bullets on innocent people is state terrorism, victims will be remembered as martyrs of the public rights movement,” he added.

During the joint meeting, it was agreed to drop all the cases and release of protesters arrested during the peaceful march toward Muzaffarabad.

Furthermore, the Committee demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate police violence in Mirpur Division and Muzaffarabad.

They demanded the judicial commission’s investigation to be made public and those responsible should be punished.
