KARACHI: In a move aiming to counter the recent rise in large numbers of traffic accidents, the government of Karachi has announced plans to add a special heavy vehicle lane to the roads of the city.
It has been confirmed by authorities that the lane will have an enforced 30 km/h speed regime, with heavier vehicles obliged to remain within the designated area at all times.
The matter was finalized during a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hasan Naqvi. The meeting was attended by transporters, Additional IG Police Afzal Khan, Secretary Transport, and DIG Traffic.
Matters that arose in the discussion include parking space shortages, the issuance of HTV licenses, vehicle registration, and insurance.
Naqvi directed the traffic police to ensure that there were no further incidents by strictly implementing traffic laws.
He also promised transporters that his administration would address their concerns, such as the provision of parking spaces wherever possible.
In the new system, the proposed goods transport terminal would be examined by the relevant authorities.
Furthermore, a reserved HTV lane will soon be marked from Mai Kolachi to the Qayyumabad Bridge.
