PESHAWAR: Voting is underway in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s highly anticipated by-elections, covering 53 villages and neighborhood councils across 17 districts.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has set up 260 polling stations to facilitate voters, with voting scheduled to continue uninterrupted until 5:00 PM today.

The districts participating in these by-elections include Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Kohat, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kolai Pals, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Lower Dir, and Bajaur, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ECP added that the number of registered voters is 345,604, with 260 polling stations established across the province for the by-elections. Security cameras have also been installed at “highly sensitive” polling stations.

These by-elections aim to fill 107 vacant seats, encompassing various categories such as general seats, women’s representation, laborers, farmers, and youth council positions.

Notably, Peshawar is witnessing elections for two women’s seats and three general seats in five village councils. However, the municipal election in Nowshera has been marred by delays and irregularities.

The ECP has emphasized the significance of this by-election as a crucial test of local governance, urging voters to participate in large numbers to ensure a smooth democratic process.

Various candidates are vying for the opportunity to represent their communities in vital roles, making this election a pivotal moment for the region.
