ISLAMABAD: The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) foiled an attempt to smuggle non-customs-paid cigarettes worth approximately Rs220 million during a major operation near Chakri, a spokesperson said on Monday.

According to the spokesperson, the operation was carried out based on a tip-off regarding the transportation of smuggled goods from Peshawar to Lahore.
During the crackdown, Motorway Police officials intercepted 11 trucks and took all 11 drivers into custody. A thorough search of the vehicles led to the recovery of a large quantity of non-customs-paid cigarettes estimated to be worth Rs220 million.
The spokesperson said the cigarettes were being smuggled to Lahore from Peshawar in an apparent attempt to evade customs duties and taxes.
Following the seizure, the recovered cigarettes, trucks and detained drivers were handed over to customs authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.
The Motorway Police reiterated its commitment to curbing smuggling and ensuring strict enforcement of laws on national highways and motorways across the country.
