ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has explained a very simple process for individuals wanting to change their marital status and have their ex-spouse’s name removed from NADRA records after a divorce.
NADRA has recently issued an important notification to all those citizens who want to alter their marital status from “married” to “divorced” in their National Identity Cards and other documents.
Step-by-Step Guide to Update Marital Status After Divorce
Firstly, the individuals have to obtain an official divorce or “Khula” certificate from the family court or mediation committee.
After that, it is important that they go back to the Union Council where the marriage was registered and apply for a divorce certificate.
The application form requires the names of the two parties, the date of divorce, a copy of the identity card of both parties, as well as the details of the witnesses.
After that process is over, the Union Council will then give out the divorce certificate.
However, it has been clarified by NADRA that both men and women separately need to provide their computerized divorce certificates to the NADRA offices so that their marital status in the computerized system can be updated.
The change in marital status would only be affected after the verification of documents to ensure that all information in the national documents is accurate.
However, this clarification has come about due to a concerned citizen posting on social media that, despite them receiving the divorce certificate from the Union Council, the names of their ex-husband were still registered as “wife” in the NADRA records.
