ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been ranked the world’s fifth most affordable country in terms of public transport, while Iceland topped the list as the most expensive.
According to a report by an Australian research body that analysed fares in 123 countries and 319 cities in 2025.
It revealed that a one-way ticket for the bus or metro costs approximately Rs 1,365 on average, while a monthly travel pass would cost around Rs 22,660.
Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway followed as some of the most expensive countries, while the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and Finland also made it to the top 10.
At the other end of the scale, all public transportation in Luxembourg is free, making it the cheapest country in the world; next come Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Pakistan.
According to the report, a one-way ticket has an average fare of Rs46 in Pakistan, while a monthly pass costs around Rs1,800.
Analysts said public transport in Pakistan remains highly affordable for ordinary commuters, while in Europe, high fares continue to heavily hit household budgets.
