Forcibly removing a woman’s niqab and then mitigating the offence by treating this awkward moment as a joke is a violation of her spirit, dignity, and religious freedom.
This act is not an isolated lapse. It reflects a disturbing pattern where the rights of Muslim women in India are disregarded with impunity by those in power. The laughter from officials on stage compounds this injustice.
We stand in solidarity with Dr. Parveen and with all Indians upholding their nation’s true pluralistic spirit. The Chief Minister must issue an unconditional apology.
Indian authorities must investigate and ensure such violations of religious freedom never recur.
The international community must take note. When fundamental rights are publicly stripped away, it is a concern for all.
