ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expressed serious concern over the ongoing theft and illegal sale of nuclear and radioactive materials in India, following recent reports of such incidents.
The Times of India had revealed that Indian police in Bihar arrested three individuals for illegally possessing 50 grams of californium, a radioactive substance valued at INR 8.5 billion.
In a statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “Pakistan is deeply worried about the repeated incidents of theft and illicit trade involving nuclear and radioactive materials in India.”
The statement highlighted the recent case where a group was found with californium, a highly radioactive and toxic substance worth approximately USD 100 million.
“These incidents raise serious questions about the effectiveness of India’s safety and security measures for handling nuclear and radioactive materials,” the statement continued. “They also indicate the presence of a black market for such sensitive materials within India.”
Pakistan is calling on the international community for a detailed explanation from Indian authorities on how such critical material ended up in the hands of unauthorized individuals.
The statement concluded with a call for a comprehensive investigation and stronger measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
