Pakistan shuts Torkham Border amid escalating tensions with Afghan Taliban

Pakistan anti-smuggling drive cuts Afghan Transit by 79%

ISLAMABA: The key Torkham border crossing that connects KP with Afghanistan’s Nangarhar remained closed over the weekend amid tensions between border forces on both sides.

International media reports said Pakistan has banned all movement in the area near the Torkham border, which is the busiest port of entry and a major transit point.

As the crossing between the two sides remains inactive, the Foreign Office is yet to provide details about the official closure.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Taliban has asked nationals to avoid the Torkham route until further notice, saying no communication has been provided by Pakistani authorities about the move.

As tensions continue to mount due to cross-border attacks and increased insurgency, the shutdown is expected to significantly disrupt trade and daily travel.

The recent closure follows a period of hostilities between Pakistani border forces and Taliban fighters, much of which focused on building security posts. Cross-border clashes have continued since the Taliban took over Afghanistan.

The situation adds to the already tense atmosphere along the shared border, which has long been a source of conflict for the two countries.
