ISLAMABAD: A recent Gallup Pakistan survey shows that Pakistan leads the world in Schengen visa rejections, with 50% of applications rejected in 2024.
Despite issuing 40,000 visas, matching last year’s numbers, half of all applicants were rejected, indicating what many are calling a visa discrimination crisis.
Interestingly, India received nearly a million Schengen visas this year, of which only 17% were rejected, revealing a clear regional disparity that is fueling outrage and raising serious questions about the transparency and fairness of Europe’s visa process.
For thousands of Pakistanis, from students and scholars to businesspeople and professionals, the growing wall of visa denials is closing the door to global opportunities. Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are the most popular destinations for Pakistani applicants, but for many, Europe is turning into a fortress.
People familiar with the development point to weak documentation, financial concerns and Pakistan’s geopolitical image as partial reasons. But critics are blaming diplomatic silence on the global front.
Despite the growing denials, no major diplomatic breakthroughs or negotiations have been initiated with EU countries to ease the burden, sparking outrage on social media and in parliament.
The Gallup figures are being seen as a warning to the government to take immediate diplomatic steps or risk alienating Pakistanis from the global conversation.
With EU states tightening their grip and Pakistan failing to respond, Pakistanis could soon find themselves cut off from education, trade, research and opportunities.
