ISLAMABAD: Contacts between the government and the opposition have intensified once again as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai for talks to discuss the prevailing political situation in the country.
According to sources, the prime minister sent a message to Mahmood Khan Achakzai, inviting him to a meeting either at the Prime Minister’s Office or the Prime Minister’s House.
However, Mahmood Khan Achakzai reportedly declined to meet at official government venues and instead suggested holding the meeting at a neutral location.
Sources said that during initial contacts last week, Achakzai had expressed willingness to meet at the residence of Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah.
The sources added that messaging between the government and the opposition continued over the past few days as efforts were made to arrange the meeting.
The expected meeting between the prime minister and the opposition leader is likely to focus on the overall political situation in the country, as well as consultations regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission.
