SKARDU: Protests have intensified in Skardu, due to which a shutter-down strike has been imposed across the city.
Thousands of people are on the streets and a large protest gathering was held at Jamia Masjid, which saw strong reactions against local and political issues.
Reports have been received that the United Nations (UN) office was set on fire by the agitators during the protest, however, Skardu Rescue and law enforcement agencies have reached the spot and efforts are underway to bring the situation under control.
Tension remains in the city and authorities have appealed to citizens to protest peacefully so that law and order can be maintained. Business activities have been suspended due to the protests and the movement of people has been restricted.
Security agencies have deployed additional personnel and patrols have been increased in sensitive areas of the city in view of the emergency situation.
Authorities say that all steps are being taken to control the situation and an alert is on to avoid any kind of unpleasant incident.
