MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has announced a public holiday tomorrow, October 08, to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the deadliest 2005 earthquake.

According to the list of yearly holidays, October 08 has been marked as Youm-e-Istehkam wa Tajdeed-e-Ahd-e-Nau. All public and private educational institutions will remain closed tomorrow, the notification said.

The region is all set to observe the October 8 earthquake anniversary as the National Disaster Awareness Day with due seriousness, respect, and determination.

The glorious tributes will be paid to the martyrs and other victims of the history’s most-worst deadly catastrophe of high magnitude in the region.

In a statement shared by the government’s spokesperson, the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Chaudhry Anwarul Haq has said that in the tragedy of October 8, 2005, the international community played an exemplary role in the earthquake under humanitarian sympathy.

“We have to move forward with renewed hope and create awareness to deal with natural disasters and minimize the damage,” he was quoted as saying.

He said that after the earthquake on October 8, the government of Pakistan and the Pakistani nation became a chain to deal with the situation, which increased our morale and made impossible work possible.
