KARACHI: The Karachi Transport Ittehad will withdraw its ongoing strike against public transport operations and will soon resume across the metropolis.
A decisive consultation between the Karachi Transport Ittehad and the Commissioner Karachi resulted in a mutually acceptable resolution of several public transport-related issues that had culminated in an organised strike.
Sources say authorities have acceded to the demand by transporters to provide a grace period of two months for the completion of biometric verification at the time of vehicle transfer and transfer of vehicles.
It was also assured to resolve the issue related to the payment of Rs 12,000 concerning third-party insurance.
A host of other problems highlighted by the transporters were put on the agenda too, and the two sides agreed to another meeting in a fortnight to assess the implementation of measures agreed upon.
It is learnt that the Karachi Transport Ittehad will soon organise a coordination meeting with its constituent transport bodies, where, after evaluating the government’s promises, its next move will be decided.
Many of the city commuters are likely to heave a sigh of relief now that public transport services are resuming and they no longer face hardships.
Issues related to administrative and regulatory regulations, insurance policies, and vehicle fitness certificates have, on different occasions, led to public transport disruptions in the transport sector of Karachi.
Discussions similar to the one held between the Karachi authorities and public transporters in the past have also revolved around deferring deadlines while simultaneously increasing road safety standards.
