Punjab bans marriage of minors under amended ordinance

Punjab bans marriage of minors under amended ordinance

LAHORE: The Punjab government has amended the Child Marriage Ordinance 2026, prohibiting marriages involving individuals below the age of 18.

Under the amended law, effective February 11, 2026, no boy or girl under 18 years of age can be married anywhere in the province.

The move aims to curb child marriages and ensure legal protection for minors, officials said. Authorities warned that violations of the law will invite legal action under the relevant provisions.

Immediate and strict action will be taken against the violating marriage registrar and family members, and a case will also be registered. The license of the marriage registrar will also be cancelled.

Both the marriage registrar and family members will be fined Rs. 5 lakh each and will also face imprisonment of 2 to 3 years
