Ramadan likely to begin on February 19

Suparco issues moon sighting forecast for Rabi-ul-Awwal 1447 AH

DUBAI: According to astronomical calculations conducted in the United Arab Emirates, the expected start date of Ramadan is February 19.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics has announced that the month of Rajab 1447 AH is expected to begin on December 21, 2025.

The head of the institute, Dr. Taha Rabah, stated that the new moon of Rajab will be born on December 20 at 3:45 am Cairo local time, and there are strong chances of sighting it on the same day.

Dr. Rabah further explained that the new moon will remain visible for about 14 minutes after sunset in Makkah, while in Cairo it can be observed for approximately 10 minutes.

In other Arab and Islamic capitals, the moon’s visibility is expected to range between 1 and 26 minutes, whereas in Ankara, Turkey, the moon is expected to set simultaneously with the sun, making sighting unlikely.
