RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Traffic Police have launched a renewed crackdown against motorcyclists riding without helmets, implementing a strict “zero tolerance” policy across the city.
According to reports, special checkpoints have been set up, and traffic units have been assigned duties on major and minor roads, including Mall Road and Peshawar Road, as well as at all entrances and exits of the city. The operation has been initiated on the directives of the CTO Rawalpindi, Farhan Aslam.
Commenting on the move, CTO Farhan Aslam said that the whole purpose of the enforcement campaign was not to make money from penalties but to save human lives.
He said that motorcyclists were responsible for approximately 73 percent of the fatal accidents on the roads, where head injuries were the major reason for death in such accidents. He said there was a dire need to promote helmet usage.
The CTO said that the enforcement campaign last time had resulted in positive results and helped to bring down head injury cases by 40 percent.
The officers requested riders to use helmets for their own safety and not just to avoid traffic tickets.
Farhan Aslam commented that the usage of helmets and lane discipline is a must for safe transportation, and he requested people to be responsible and safeguard themselves from traffic tickets and dangerous situations.
