LAHORE: The old Ordinance 2025 regarding heavy fines and imprisonment for violations of traffic laws has been repealed in Punjab, after which motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers and common citizens are likely to get big relief.
Taking an important step for public relief, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider signed the Provincial Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill 2026. After the Governor’s signature, the previous ordinance containing heavy fines and severe punishments has been abolished, while the new law will be applicable immediately in the entire province.
Under the new amendment bill, imprisonment for violation of traffic laws has been abolished, while fines for various violations have been reduced by up to 90%.
According to the new law, the fine for not having a driving license has been reduced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,000, while the penalty for violating one-way traffic was previously 6 months in prison and a fine of Rs 50,000, which will now be only Rs 5,000.
Similarly, the penalty for driving under age and imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 has been abolished and a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed, while the fine for driving without a fitness certificate will be only Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 50,000.
Similarly, the fine for overloading and making passengers sit on the roof of the vehicle has also been reduced from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5,000.
Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider said that the people are already burdened by severe inflation, in such circumstances, it was not appropriate to impose heavy fines under the guise of traffic laws.
He said that the PPP is a people’s party, we have always prioritized public service, the aim of these amendments is to reduce the financial burden on poor citizens, motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers and daily wage earners while maintaining the rule of law.
