Sindh raises concerns over removal of Mohenjo Daro imagery from currency notes

KARACHI: The Sindh government has written to the Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Jameel Ahmad over the possible removal of Mohenjo Daro imagery from newly designed currency notes.

Sindh’s Culture and Tourism Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah, urged the SBP governor to consider the importance of the Mohenjo Daro’s picture on currency note and urged not the remove it.

Minister Zulfiqar Ali Shah raised concerns about the image of Mohan Jo Daro not being included in the proposed new designs for the currency note, given its unparalleled historical significance and its representation of Sindh’s and Pakistan’s heritage.

In the letter, a copy of which is available with Daily Ausaf, the Sindh Minister wrote that replacing the image of Mohen Jo Daro initially featured on the Rs.10 note in 1970 and later on the Rs.20 note, is not merely a historical site but a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site that symbolizes a rich and invaluable cultural heritage.

“Mohen Jo Daro represents one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations, with its origins streaching back 5,000 years. Its depiction оn our currency not only celebrates our heritage but also educates and inspires a sense of pride in our ancient legacy,” the Sindh culture minister wrote in a letter.
