Akhtar Mengal's rally

MASTUNG: A suicide bomber detonated explosives near a sit-in rally of Sardar Akhtar Mengal at Lakpass Tunnel in Mastung, Levies officials reported on Saturday.

According to police details, at least two persons were injured in the explosion as the major attack was narrowly escaped.

The attacker attempted to enter the sit-in but was intercepted by security personnel and BNP-M workers stationed near the protest site. Upon being stopped, he detonated himself in an open field nearby after failing to escape.

Levies officials stated that the attacker arrived on a motorcycle with an accomplice, who managed to escape following the blast.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. The nature of the explosion and any possible casualties have not yet been confirmed.

The suicide bomber was bound to target the long march of the Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal), led by Akhat Mengal, against the police crackdown and arrest of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) chief organiser Mahrang Baloch, other leaders, and party workers.

Led by BNP President Sardar Akhtar Mengal, the marchers set off from Wadh, Mengal’s hometown.

The incident comes amid the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan, with various terrorist attacks in recent weeks.

At least five passengers were killed when armed men offloaded and executed them after intercepting a Karachi-bound bus in Gwadar’s Kalmat area.

The attack came days after terrorists killed at least eight people— four labourers and four police personnel in the Kalat and Noshki districts last week.

Moreover, recently, at least five people, including three Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers, were martyred and 35 others wounded in an explosion on a paramilitary convoy on the Nushki-Dalbandin highway.
