WATCH: Car with women inside falls sinkhole on busy road

JAAC's attack leaves 4 security personnel martyred, over 20 injured

KARACHI:  The panic in Karachi started when a car with two women inside crashed into a deep water-filled sinkhole, which developed after the road at Tariq Road Cafe Liberty collapsed.

According to reports, the women were inside a parked car when the ground suddenly collapsed. The ground collapse caused the vehicle to sink into a deep hole, which contained water.

Eyewitnesses reported that the women shouted for help while residents ran to the location to inform rescuers about the situation. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and successfully rescued both women from the vehicle.

Police and rescue officials established a security perimeter that blocked all traffic and pedestrian passage. The damaged vehicle from the pit required recovery through a private lifter, which authorities called in to assist with the operation.

The authorities have not yet determined what caused the collapse because most street collapses in Karachi occur due to underground pipes that have been in use for too long and because the road surfaces above them become unstable.

The social media platforms contained videos of the incident, which spread rapidly to the public, creating worries about the poor state of the city’s infrastructure and the dangerous conditions on the roads.

The incident did not produce any injuries, but it created new doubts about how the city manages its urban infrastructure and how it protects public safety in commercial districts throughout Karachi.
