KARACHI: In a tragic turn of events, a water tanker crushed two motorcyclists near Safari Park, resulting in one immediate death and another receiving serious injury on Karachi’s University Road.
The incident caused widespread outrage, sparking survival riots from angry citizens who set the water tankers on fire.
This tragic incident comes on the heels of another fatal accident involving a water tanker on February 18. A speedy water tanker hit a motorcyclist near Jail Chowrangi, killing the rider, identified as Gulshan Rasheed. The incident led to a violent protest, with citizens setting fire to five water tankers.
Karachi saw this disturbing increase in traffic accidents, wherein 107 fatalities were recorded during just the first 45 days of 2025, affecting 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls. At least 1,493 citizens were reported injured in these accidents.
According to the traffic police, most accidents occurred due to the involvement of heavy automobiles, including dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers.
Consequently, the police have filed 34,655 challans and arrested 490 bus drivers. Further, to investigate the causes of the road accidents, a four-member committee has been set up to suggest further action for road safety.
