WhatsApp, Instagram face disruption in Pakistan as PTI stage Rawalpindi protest

WhatsApp introduces new privacy feature for contact management

RAWALPINDI: As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced a demonstration in Rawalpindi, the district administration has slowed down the internet service in the city. The life crippled in the garrison city with the closure of the metro bus, major intersections, and thoroughfares.

Following the PTI’s protest call, social media users are facing disruption in major platforms including WhatsApp and Instagram across the country.

DownDetector, the internet service monitoring website, showed that WhatsApp users facing difficulties sending media files via mobile data starting in the wee hours on Saturday.

Internet monitoring platform also confirmed the outages in PTCL and Instagram services which heightened at 6:00 PM on Saturday, while services on other platforms remained normal.

A similar disruption was reported during PTI’s previous rally in Islamabad and Lahore. The disruptions affected mobile data users, while those connected to broadband services remained unaffected. Other social media platforms, such as YouTube, continued to function normally.
