Babar Azam’s Cricketing Career Debut
When Babar Azam scored his fifth ODI century against the West Indies in his 25th innings in early 2017, he became the second-fastest player after Quinton De Kock to score five ODI hundreds. His total of 1306 runs after 25 knocks was the highest, surpassing Jonathan Trott’s total. Babar Azam’s life has been full of twists and turns. His three consecutive ODI tonnes against the Windies in the UAE in 2016 foreshadowed a glorious career that awaits us.
Mohammad Babar Azam was born in Lahore and is the Akmal brothers’ first cousin. Azam, a right-handed batsman, known for his discipline and calm demeanor, established himself as a long-term fixture in Pakistan’s batting order with a strong performance in 2016. He was Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in 2010 and 2012 under-19 World Cups. Before being called up to the national team in 2015, Azam had the distinction of consistently being the top scorer in age-group domestic cricket.
Pakistani batsman Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq were retiring, and Azam had a chance to cement his place in the national team. He would seize that opportunity and then some, eventually becoming Pakistan’s best batsman. His hat-trick of ODI hundreds against the West Indies earned him a Test debut, and he is now regarded as one of the world’s best batters.
He was the second-fastest player to score 1000 ODI runs and the second-fastest to score 1000 T20I runs in history. He already has more ODI hundreds than all but two Pakistan batters. His World Cup century against New Zealand will be remembered as one of Pakistan’s most outstanding individual ODI performances. Babar Azam is also regarded as one of the best Test batters globally at the start of 2018.
