Dubai-based Indian-origin cricketer dies after collapsing during match

DUBAI: A Dubai-based Indian-origin cricketer, Mohammed Safwan Shanu, died after collapsing during a cricket match, leaving the local cricket community in shock.

According to reports, the 38-year-old cricketer suddenly fell unconscious while batting during a regular weekly cricket match on Sunday morning.

Fellow players immediately rushed to assist him and called an ambulance. However, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Safwan had been living in the United Arab Emirates for the past 15 years and was a well-known figure in Dubai’s cricket circles. He represented and captained several local teams and earned recognition for his performances in various tournaments.

His close friend, Nabil, said there were no signs of illness or discomfort before the incident. “Everything was normal during the match. Safwan suddenly collapsed while batting. He was given immediate medical attention, but unfortunately, he could not survive,” he said.

Friends and teammates remembered Safwan as a talented batsman and a kind-hearted individual who treated everyone with respect and affection.

Following news of his sudden death, his parents travelled from India to Dubai to attend his funeral. Family members and friends arranged the necessary travel documents and visas to ensure they could participate in the last rites.

Mohammed Safwan Shanu hailed from Bhatkal in the Indian state of Karnataka. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and a four-month-old daughter.

According to his friends, Safwan will be remembered not only for his contributions to cricket but also for his humble nature and deep love for the game.
