NEW YORK: After the first two rounds of the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, five countries have been confirmed to be eliminated from the tournament.
In the largest global competition in history, consisting of 48 teams, a total of 16 teams will be eliminated by the end of the group stage, while the remaining 32 teams will make it to the next stage (Round of 32).
The 5 teams that have lost their opening two matches and have lost access to the next stage include Turkey, Jordan, Haiti, Tunisia, and Panama.
Haiti, a country of CONCACAF (Caribbean Islands), has reached the end of its journey from Group C. The Haitian team, which qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, suffered consecutive defeats against Scotland and Brazil.
On the other hand, Turkey has become the first team from Europe to be eliminated, having suffered unexpected defeats in their opening two matches against Australia and Paraguay.
Speaking of the African continent, Tunisia is the only team to have been eliminated from the group stage so far, having suffered a humiliating 4-4 defeat against Sweden and Japan.
Similarly, Jordan, representing the Asian continent, also failed to advance from the preliminary stage and became the first Asian team to be eliminated from the tournament.
Finally, the hopes of Panama, a team from CONCACAF (Central America) from Group L, were also dashed, having suffered defeats against Ghana and Croatia by the same margin of 1-0.
Haiti’s journey from Group C has come to an end. Haiti has suffered consecutive defeats against Scotland and Brazil.
On the other hand, Turkey has become the first team among the powerful teams in Europe whose departure has been confirmed, having suffered unexpected defeats at the hands of Australia and Paraguay in their opening two matches.
