ISLAMABAD: The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday approved the event programme and athlete quotas of cricket for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
As per the details, the Olympic committee confirmed that cricket will be played in T20 format, featuring six teams each in the men’s and women’s tournaments.
The game was last featured at Paris 1900, where a one-off, two-day match between Great Britain and France was held — now recognised as an unofficial Test.
A quota of total 90 athletes has been allocated for each gender, allowing every team to name a 15-member squad.
The statement issued by the Olympic body stated that the cricket venues and schedule for LA 2028 will be finalised closer to the Games.
Apart from that, the IOC also approved the inclusion of four other games for LA28, including baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash.
“Cricket’s inclusion at LA28 follows a growing trend of the sport making an appearance at different multi-sport events. A men’s cricket tournament was held at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, while the women’s game made its CWG debut at Birmingham 2022,” the statement issued by the IOC read.
The Los Angeles Games will run from July 14 to 30, 2028, featuring a record 351 medal events across 36 sports. A total of 11,198 athletes — comprising 5,655 women and 5,543 men — will compete, marking significant progress toward gender equality in Olympic participation.
