LAHORE: The new owners of Pakistan International Airlines, the Arif Habib Group, have emerged as one of the leading contenders to buy one of the two new franchises for the Pakistan Super League in 2026.

The group, fresh from completing the landmark Rs. 135 billion acquisition of PIA, is believed to be amongst the most serious bidders in the ongoing process for league expansion.

Industry sources indicate Inverex and the Arif Habib Group are currently the most likely to pick up the two available teams as the PSL progresses from six to eight franchises.

Twelve Bids for New PSL Franchise

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced an extraordinary and encouraging response to the ongoing tender for the sale of two new franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

According to the board, a total of 12 different parties have formally submitted their bids within the stipulated period, which reflects the growing interest and confidence in the league.

The PCB says that the bidders belong to five different continents of the world, including the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan.

According to the cricket board, this international interest is evidence that the Pakistan Super League has made a strong mark not only locally but also globally, and its commercial status is constantly increasing.

The board has said that the results of this initial stage of bidding will be announced on December 27. After this, in the next phase, those parties that meet the technical criteria will be allowed to participate in an open competitive bidding process, through which two new teams can be purchased.

The next phase will be held on January 8 at the Islamabad Convention Center.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board, this entire process will be completed transparently and competitively in accordance with international standards to ensure the expansion and development of the Pakistan Super League.

The PCB says that the inclusion of new franchises will expand the scope of the league, fans will get to watch more quality cricket, and the reputation of Pakistan cricket will be further strengthened at the local and international levels.
