MUMBAI: Suryakumar Yadav has been stripped of the captaincy of the T20 format, the Indian board has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the T20 team.

India has announced the squad for the upcoming T20 series against Ireland and England, in which 15-year-old emerging batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been included for the first time, while Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the team.

According to the Indian Cricket Board, Suryavanshi performed brilliantly in the recent Indian Premier League season, scoring 776 runs in 16 matches and also breaking Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in a season.

He became the first player in the history of the league to be declared the Most Valuable Player and the Best Emerging Player at the same time, while representing Rajasthan Royals.

If Suryavanshi gets a chance to debut against Ireland or England, he will become the youngest player to represent the senior Indian men’s team and break the record of Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at the age of 16.

Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar said that Suryavanshi has not only played well since the beginning of the season but has also led the team to victories almost single-handedly in pressured matches.

On the other hand, the decision to hand over the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer was taken after he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 IPL title. India will play two T20 matches against Ireland later this month, followed by a five-match series against England in July.
