CHITRAL: Renowned mountaineer Sirbaz Khan has successfully scaled  Tirich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush range in Chitral.

The expedition, called  Tirich Mir Expedition 2025, was organised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority and involved both national and local mountaineers.

Tirich Mir, standing at an altitude of 7,708 metres, was first climbed by a Norwegian team in 1950. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the historic climb, which is being celebrated as the “platinum jubilee” of the first ascent of  Tirich Mir.

Sarbaz Khan’s team also included two young mountaineers from Chitral, Akmal Naveed and Shamsul Qamar, who managed to reach 7,200 metres but could not scale the peak.

Before the climb, Shamsul Qamar told V News that he was excited to be part of the mission to scale the majestic  Tirich Mir, saying it would encourage local youth to take up mountaineering and promote tourism in the region.

Recently, another Pakistani team led by renowned Hunza climber Abdul Joshi also scaled  Tirich Mir, becoming the first Pakistani team to do so.

Located in Chitral’s  Tirich Valley, the peak is steeped in folklore — locally considered the abode of fairies and considered the palace of gods in Kalash traditions.

Sarbaz Khan, who hails from Hunza’s Shamshal Valley, is already celebrated as the first Pakistani climber to scale all 14 of the world’s peaks above 8,000 meters.
