ABU DHABI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given its nod to the hybrid model proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and it has been reported that the neutral venue for the tournament has been chosen to be the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Consequently, the tournament matches of India, including the much-anticipated contest against Pakistan, will probably take place in UAE. The tournament, which is to start on February 19, 2025, is expected to provide thrilling displays of cricket rivalry among the best teams of the world.
Barely, this competition was supposed to be hosted by Pakistan with eight teams divided into two groups and venues being Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
As per reports, the ICC agreed on a hybrid model on December 19, with the provision that India plays its ICC Champions Trophy 2025 matches in a neutral venue.
This agreement also calls for neutral venues for the matches of Pakistan in ICC tournaments hosted by India prior to 2027. As reported by Cricinfo, the resolution sets out the agreement, which is slated for an ICC board vote. The agreement specifies that during the 2024-2027 event cycle, all matches involving India in a Pakistan-hosted event will be held at a neutral venue.
It also states that in return, Pakistan will play all matches in an event hosted by India at a neutral venue. This agreement covers the 2025 men’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, the 2025 women’s ODI World Cup in India, and the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The choice of the UAE as a venue for the tournament is vital due to a bitter rivalry between India and Pakistan. The two teams have lots of history and every time they meet, the pressure is at its highest since stakes are also very high.
