Veteran Indian batsman announces retirement from cricket: Here's why!

MUMBAI: Veteran Indian cricket team batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has announced his retirement from cricket.

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), Indian Test cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Sunday. Pujara had failed to make a place in India’s Test squad for a long time and the BCCI had started giving opportunities to young players.

Pujara has done great service for India during his career. He is considered one of India’s greatest Test batsmen.

He played his last Test match against Australia in 2023 at Kingston Oval. After that, he was not included in the team, although rumors of his return were also circulating before the 2025 tour of Australia, but the selectors trusted less experienced players.

Senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have also said goodbye to the format after India’s disappointing Test performance. In such a situation, the chances of a comeback for Pujara are almost non-existent, so he has now decided to retire.

Pujara’s emotional statement

Cheteshwar Pujara said in his emotional message on the social media account Instagram that wearing the Indian jersey, singing the national anthem and trying his best every time on the field is impossible to describe in words, but as they say, every good thing must come to an end. With this gratitude, I announce my retirement from all formats of Indian cricket. Thank you for all your love and support.

He added that he will always be grateful to his teammates, coaches and all those who helped him during his career.
