Zafar Gohar eyes England call-up after gaining eligibility

LAHORE: Pakistani-origin spinner Zafar Gohar is aiming for a place in the England team after meeting eligibility requirements, adding a new dimension to his career in county cricket.

Traditionally, spinners in English county cricket are expected to improve with age and contribute with the bat. Gohar, 31, now fulfills a third key condition: he is eligible to represent the England cricket team after obtaining British citizenship.

Having previously represented Pakistan in one Test and one ODI, Gohar shifted his focus to England following limited international opportunities. He moved from Gloucestershire to the Middlesex County Cricket Club in 2025, where he has delivered consistent performances.

While his wicket tally has been modest this season, his batting contributions — including 164 runs and a notable innings of 83  underline his value as an all-rounder.

Gohar acknowledged the challenges of spin bowling in English conditions but emphasized that success is achievable through hard work and tactical discipline. He also expressed pride in performing at venues like Lord’s Cricket Ground, where spinners often struggle.

Reflecting on his earlier career, Gohar said he was disappointed by the limited chances he received with Pakistan despite strong domestic and county performances, which ultimately led him to pursue opportunities in England.

He remains optimistic that, if given a chance at the international level with England, he will make the most of it and showcase his abilities.
