CALIFORNIA: Apple’s new flagship, the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, is being criticized after several users complained about decolourization and fading on the aluminium body of some models.
The issue, first noticed on Reddit, seems to be affecting the Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue colour options.
It started with some initial postings on Reddit by early adopters who reported unusual fading on their Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max devices. At first, it was written off as one-off occurrences, but additional users have now come forward saying the same fading effect, which could indicate that the issue is not isolated.
According to user photos and discussions, the decolourization typically begins around the camera island before gradually spreading across the entire aluminium frame, with the matte glass back panel untouched.
Although the initial reports concerned the owners of the Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro are now also complaining of the issue. In each instance, the fading appears to mute the phone’s metallic color, creating a mottled, washed-out look.
Some Redditors quipped their formerly bright Cosmic Orange iPhones had morphed into an accidental Rose Gold version after sitting in the sunlight.
Community rumor suspects UV light exposure as the culprit. Numerous users have stated that their iPhones started fading after limited exposure outdoors, which argues that the aluminium coating is not UV-resistant enough.
Although Apple has so far made no official comment, reports describe the fading as occurring more quickly when devices are used or left in the sun, especially in hot climates.
The scope of the problem is not yet known, and there has been no word from Apple as to how many units are involved. But analysts expect the company to exchange discoloured units under warranty, as it has done with past hardware finish problems.
Test units checked by some technology publications have so far not displayed any noticeable fading, though testing under extended outdoor exposure continues.
In a tongue-in-cheek surprise, some owners have reported they don’t object to the discoloration, stating the sun-kissed Cosmic Orange devices look like Apple’s discontinued classic Rose Gold finish. “If you’re missing Rose Gold,” one Reddit comment stated, “simply leave your Cosmic Orange iPhone outside in the sun.
Nevertheless, for those who like their costly flagship phones to remain in their original color, the issue questions Apple’s new anodization process and the 17 Pro’s aluminium coating durability.
