ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has initiated the process to link its nodes with the 2Africa submarine cable network after it technically disconnected SMW-3 undersea cable, the oldest submarine internet network.
As per details, Pakistan has ended the connection with the SMW (South Asia-Middle East-West Asia) cable network, the oldest as well as longest in the world.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the country has now started preparations for getting connected to the new 45,000km cable system, AAE-2 (Africa, Asia, and Europe) connecting 46 locations.
The AAE-2 system expected to be online by the end of next year will be carried out in multiple phases.
In the first phase which began on Dec 1, the submarine cable involving Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation would land at Hawksbay, Karachi.
The second phase, which includes connecting the cable from Hawkesbay with the main AAE-2 in the deep sea, will start in April next year.
The telecom authority praised Transworld Associates (TWA), the landing partner of 2Africa submarine cable, for bringing the new facility to Pakistan.
Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said that the deployment of 2Africa cable is a critical step to transform Pakistan into a digitally connected nation.
Speaking about the progress of the cable system, the State Minister said this initiative will not only strengthen our infrastructure but will also improve internet speed and reliability.
