ISLAMABAD: In a recent development towards healthy digital consumption, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) invoked significant measures against online illegal activities, with more than 1,400,000 sites blocked under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The authority blocked 109,771 sites, including 33,634 sites which were blocked due to potential threats for the defense and security of the nation, and 268 sites were suspended for blasphemous content.
Additionally, 55,723 sites were blocked against unethical sites and hate speech, respectively. Moreover, acting against the incitement of hatred among communities, the PTA blocked 13,422 sites for incitement of religious hatred and 1,058 for offensive or objectionable content. Moreover, 2,428 sites were blocked for a variety of other illegal activities.
Earlier, to create awareness about cyber safety, the PTA organized Cybersecurity Awareness Week in 2024, which will be observed from December 9 to 15.
The program was intended to create awareness among individuals and consumers about online security, data privacy, and the legitimate aspects of cybercrimes in accordance with PECA 2016. Citizens, enterprises, and educational institutions were invited to participate in this campaign and contribute to the enhancement of Pakistan’s cyber environment.
